50 shades of mummy porn
An entry from Word of the Year 2012
Who would have expected a growth publishing market to be suburban erotica for women? ‘Mummy porn’ is Mills and Boon with a twist. The best thing about researching this word was reading some of the reviews of 50 Shades of Grey. Very entertaining. There has also been considerable effort put into variations on the name of the book, for example Dr Karl’s 50 Shades of Grey Matter and a Fifty Sheds of Grey parody which is described as 'a compilation of shed erotica for the not-so-modern man'.
The genre has been so successful that we can expect imitation shades of every colour under the rainbow for a while yet before the readership recovers from the shock of titillation. But will it be the Word of the Year? So far it has barely raised an eyebrow.
