brumby

Among a group of anything, for example, 2001 Ford Falcons, only one is no good - this is called a brumby. It could refer to anything as long it is the same make & model: This year's Hyandi Elantra is a great car, but I bought a brumby because every thing seems to go wrong with it.

Contributor's comments: I grew up in Adelaide in the 1960s and 'brumby' was an accepted term to mean a purchased manufactured item eg. appliance or toy that was faulty or prone to breakdown and in the sense that it was an unlucky purchase in that another item form the same manufacturer would generally be OK. Both parents and grandparents were solely South Australian.
