buckboard

Contributor's comments: A utility motor vehicle. In the 1950s in Adelaide as a child I learned the word buckboard for what later I learned to call a ute: "Can I put this in your buckboard?" When an owner replied in 1960 "I suppose it is getting old" I discovered that it was the left-over name for the horse-drawn equivalent.
